The Leadership Era Has Changed - Have You?

Over the past few decades, we’ve seen a cultural shift from top-down, command-and-control styles to more collaborative, emotionally intelligent ones – we all learned about EQ. For many of us, and our organizations, this was real leadership progress. A move from hierarchy to relationships. From managing tasks to leading people.
But in 2025, that shift is no longer enough. With the introduction of AI systems into our business, and our leadership, we’ve reached the end of what emotional intelligence alone can solve. Not because EQ isn’t valuable, but because the context of leadership has changed again.
We are now entering a third era. One that demands a completely different way of thinking, perceiving, and leading. I am now calling this the age of Synergistic Leadership, because of the synergy needed between Human and AI systems.
From Hierarchy to Relationship to Synergy
For most of the 20th century, leadership was defined by structure and authority. If you had the title, you had the power. Success meant climbing the ladder, enforcing policy, and optimizing systems. I call this the Hierarchical Era. Leaders were rewarded for consistency, control, and linear thinking.
Then came the Relational Era. Leadership became more human. Emotional intelligence, coaching, and feedback rose in importance. Influence replaced authority as the currency of leadership. And while this shift brought needed growth, it was still rooted in who you are in relation to others.
Neither era prepared us for a world where AI has the ability to think alongside us. Used properly, AI can generate insights faster than we can. In such an environment, we need to rewire the way our brains work.
That’s where Synergistic Leadership begins.
AI Changed the Playing Field. You Must Change the Player.
We are the first generation of leaders facing a reality where AI will begin to handle mundane cognitive work. Not just calculations. Not just automation. But thinking. AI can write strategy memos, sort complex datasets, generate product ideas, and brainstorm with you at 2 a.m.
We must transform who we are as leaders to adjust to this new addition. Leaders today must navigate a new landscape where:
Decision-making is increasingly decentralized
The pace of change outstrips institutional memory
And human perception, what you notice, how you think, what you filter, determines your relevance
This is why leadership must shift again. Not toward more empathy. But toward expanded awareness, faster cognitive adaptability, and intentional rewiring.
That’s what Synergistic Leadership delivers.
Why Old Leadership Development Approaches Do Not Work
Let’s be honest. Most leadership development is still stuck in the Relational Era. We tell people to be more empathetic, improve their communication, take personality tests, and learn how to give feedback.
None of that is wrong, but, it’s not enough. The old way of leadership development trains behavior without transforming perception. In other words, we need to lead differently but we are still thinking the same way. And in a world where AI can instantly generate an idea or a plan, your value as a leader is no longer just in output. It’s in how you perceive, decide, and adapt.
Synergistic Leadership Is the Next Evolution
At haveLAB, we define Synergistic Leadership as: A post-EQ model of leadership that integrates developmental consciousness, neuroplasticity, and Human-AI synergy to evolve how leaders think, decide, and lead.
That may sound like a mouthful, but here’s the simple truth: we must evolve the human alongside the machine.
Synergistic Leaders:
Collaborate with AI instead of resisting it
Use neuroplasticity to rewire their default reactions
Ask bigger questions about perception, not just performance
Lead from clarity, not overwhelm
Expand their identity as the foundation for all other growth
They don’t just take in new knowledge. They reorganize their mental architecture.
This is the next level of leadership development, and most companies (and leaders) haven’t caught up yet. It is not enough to become a “better version” of your 2019 self. You must become a fundamentally new kind of leader.
In my upcoming book Upgrade: Five Leadership Accelerators for AI-Powered Success, I lay out a exact process for doing this, from shifting perception to partnering with AI to building cognitive agility under pressure. You’ll learn how to change how you see, not just what you do.
